Repower Port Augusta Statement on Alinta Power Station & Mine Closure

Repower Port Augusta’s thoughts are with workers and their families who’ve found out today that the Port Augusta Power Station will close by March 2016 and the Leigh Creek Coal mine will close on November 17 this year.

“It is no doubt a difficult day for everyone impacted by the early closure of the power station and coal mine” Lisa Lumsden, Repower Port Augusta Spokesperson said. “There is no doubt hard days ahead for many people in our community, including our members, who will be impacted by this”.

“It’s critical now that the South Australian and Federal Government steps up with a transition plan for our community, including making solar thermal happen, to create new jobs and provide as much support to workers and the community as is required in this difficult time” Ms Lumsden said.

“Repower Port Augusta will continue to work to create new opportunities for clean jobs in Port Augusta and we are ready to work with all levels of government, unions and business to do what it takes to make it happen” Ms Lumsden.
