Campaign Update: Walk for Solar and progress in Parliament

The momentum keeps building…

On the ground the Repower Port Augusta team led by AYCC are steadily preparing for the Walk for Solar and the rallies in Port Augusta and Adelaide. Over 100 people have registered for the walk so far. Training for volunteers will be held this weekend in Adelaide so get in touch if you can lend a hand.

Public talks on the Repower Port Augusta campaign have also started spreading across the country. BZE have held events in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney and are continuing to train volunteers to present in their communities.

Having heard that public support is building, Dick Smith with documentary makers from the ABC and from GT Films have decided to include the Port Augusta story in their projects. Stay tuned to see Repower Port Augusta on TV!

This growing community support has been critical in getting traction with politicians and decision makers. We have continued to brief both state and federal representatives of South Australia, and will soon head to Canberra to broaden national recognition of the campaign. At a state level some progress has been made, with South Australian Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis in the US at the moment checking out the solar thermal projects in Nevada, and local member for Stuart Dan Van Holst Pellekaan proposing to set up a select committee to investigate solar thermal in parliament.

To get six solar thermal plants built in Port Augusta, however, we will need support from the Federal Government. So start getting your friends, family and colleagues to sign the petition and get to the rally in Adelaide on the 30th September if you can.
